Memorial Dedication Saturday
The Leelanau Enterprises & Tribune
Thursday, Sept 19, 1974

Former (retired) Circuit Judge Charles Brown of Traverse City will be dedication speaker at 11 a.m. Saturday when the new $3,500 stone-granite-masonry lighted Memorial honoring all Leelanau County veterans is formally dedicated.

Circuit Judge Brown is himself a veteran of World War II in which he served as a Colonel. He is a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the American Legion and the AMVETS.

The memorial is currently nearing completion on the front lawn of the Leelanau County Courthouse. It was designed by members of VEW of Leelanau County but honors the VFW, Disabled American Veterans, American Legion and the AMVETS. Each organization will be named on one of four circular emblems at the top of the memorial.

A wreath will be placed on the memorial in tribute to those who have lost their lives in the service of their country.

The monument will carry the names of at least 35 such veterans and more names will be added as they are obtained by the VFW which has publicized the fact that it needs the name of each and every Leelanau County Veteran who paid the supreme sacrifice for inclusion in the permanent list in the monument itself.

Such names should be turned in to VFW Commander Adolph Zimmerman of Lake Leelanau or to any VFW member.

The grey-granite memorial stone was provided at cost by A. W. Rickerd Monument Co. of Traverse City. The memorial is to be lighted 24 hours a day.

Participating in the dedication will be members of the four veterans organizations and members of the County Board of Commissioners.
